Southernmost wind farm in the world: renewable energy for our operations in Tierra del Fuego
Through the development of the Río Cullen wind farm, we aim to further improve the efficiency of our operations in Tierra del Fuego by incorporating renewable energy, reducing emissions, and strengthening the reliability of the electricity supply across our facilities.
The project involved the construction of a wind farm combining wind generation and battery storage to power Total Austral’s gas treatment plants in Río Cullen and Cañadón Alfa, both located in an area not connected to the grid. As a result, these offgrid facilities are the first TotalEnergies Exploration & Production site worldwide to operate with a renewable hybrid system of this scale.
The wind farm includes two wind turbines with a hub height of 86 meters and a rotor diameter of 136 meters, with a total installed capacity of 9 MW of renewable energy. They are located 130 km north of the city of Río Grande, in an area characterized by exceptional wind conditions that optimize their performance.
The energy generated is complemented by a battery storage system provided by Saft, a TotalEnergies affiliate, ensuring the stability and continuity of the electricity supply. This enhances operational reliability while reducing dependence on rotating equipment.
Thanks to this solution, emissions associated with the electricity generation required to operate the facilities are expected to be reduced by more than 55% by the end of the Austral Basin concession.
